An incredible piece of tribal art. The Bozo people from Mali are a fishing, river dwelling tribe known as the 'masters of the river'. The large wooden mask is that of a hyena used in entertainment-based masquerades and was danced by the men in the community. The modern hyena mask is recognizably more simplified and often painted in brighter polychrome colors. This mask is made from wood coated with mud, straw, eggshells and other natural, organic material. We have never seen anything quite like this!
